How to Choose Your First Watch
A first watch is easy to get wrong, usually by buying something too large, too flashy, or too specific. Five things matter more than the rest.
1. Size before anything else
Case diameter decides whether a watch looks right on you. Under 38mm reads small and dressy. 38mm to 42mm suits most wrists and most occasions. Above 44mm is a statement, and on a slim wrist it will wear you rather than the other way round.
If you are unsure, 40mm is the safe answer.
2. Decide what it is for
A watch that has to work at a wedding, at the office, and on a weekend should be simple: clean dial, no loud colours, no chronograph clutter. Buy the versatile one first and the interesting one second.
3. Strap changes everything
- Steel bracelet — most versatile, dresses up and down
- Leather — smarter, warmer, does not love water or heat
- Rubber or silicone — casual and practical in summer
Straps are also the cheapest way to make one watch feel like three.
4. Match the dial to your wardrobe
White and silver dials are the easiest to wear. Black is close behind. Blue has become a safe choice too. Green, bronze and heavily textured dials are excellent watches to own once you already have a plain one.
5. Buy the one you keep looking at
Specifications matter less than whether you actually want to put it on. If you have opened the same product page four times, that is your answer.
